Looks from '50s, '60s dominate Cologne show

Cologne, Germany--Lean lines and bold geometric shapes in deep browns and rich vanillas dominated at the International Furniture Fair in Cologne last month.

But the linear, sleek, tailored looks--seen in both upholstery and case pieces--offered function, versatility and comfort as much as clean design.

Most notable were the long, lean sofas with low proportions and, frequently, track arms straight from the 1950s and 1960s. The long sofas, paired with corner pieces, shorter sofas, chaises and ottomans, created a new, less bulky alternative to the 1970s-style sectionals.
