NEW YORK -- Value City Department Stores has breathed new life into a well-established but bankrupt off-price retail institution, Filene's Basement, confirming reports in WWD last month.
Value City said Thursday that, through its wholly owned Base Acquisition Corp. subsidiary, it had acquired control of Filene's Basement, effective immediately. Both the Base management agreement and the purchase agreement are subject to approval of the federal bankruptcy court in Boston.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but sources pegged the purchase price at $50 million. Value City said the transaction would close by mid-March.
