Article: Oil Producers Turn Up The Heat On Kazakstan.(Brief Article)

Some of Kazakstan's largest oil producers have warned of dire consequences if the government does not rescind a ruling which forces them to sell crude on the domestic market at rock-bottom prices.

In decree No. 1978 signed at the end of last year by Prime Minister Kasymzhomart Tokaev a ceiling of 22 million metric tons (440,000 b/d) was imposed on crude oil exports for 2000 (NC Dec.6,p8). At the time, foreign oil producers were told they would have to supply a certain amount of their output to Kazak refiners. The decision was prompted by a sharp drop in refinery output last year, and a meteoric rise in crude exports.
