Metalworking's past and future come together on one campus in the town of Elgoibar, in the region of northern Spain called the Basque Country. The campus belongs to the Machine Tool Institute, or IMH (for its name in Spanish). One building houses a metalworking museum, which includes a working replica of a steam-powered machine shop. Leather belts descend from three shafts in the ceiling to drive more than a dozen lathes, drill presses and milling machines. Meanwhile, all of the rest of IMH's campus is devoted to more contemporary technology.
