Insurers both large and small are now moving to make hand-held computing devices, such as 3Com's popular Palm Pilot, part of their computing and IT infrastructures.
Rather than a matter of devices being handed down to agents from the top levels of management, however, the impetus to shift toward palmtop units, a broad category that also includes Web-enabled cell phones and interactive pagers, seems to be coming primarily from the bottom up.
