The latest set of red-eye Christmas photos could be your last, thanks to chemists in France and Belgium. They have invented a new type of photographic emulsion that is at least ten times more sensitive than those on the market today.
The emulsion needs such a small amount of light to capture an image that it could make flash bulbs obsolete and open up a range of new possibilities in high-speed photography.
Research team leader Jacqueline Belloni of the Universite Paris-Sud in France told C&I that the system was a major advance. 'A lot of photographers dream of having an extra 5%,' she said. 'Think of the importance of multiplying by ten.
