Feb. 8--In recognition of Black History month, we decided to chat with Natalia Smith, a digitization librarian for UNC-Chapel Hill. She works on "Documenting the American South," a vast online database of southern writing and literature, including a collection of slave narratives. Smith and her team of 16 scan every page of a book into a computer file, and then check word by word the electronic copy against the original. Then they "encode" it using something called Standard Generalized Markup Language, or SGML, which again involves poring over each sentence and building in a series of "tags"containing information about the text.
