There is a poignant quality to this year's volume of work from "the best of the small presses." It begins with the dedication in memoriam to William Matthews, poet and editor. One of his last poems, the brief and bittersweet "Grandmother, Dead at 99 Years and 10 Months" ("she amazed the menfolk / and, more gallantly, outlived them / including two of her three sons"), is included here. So is "A Hemingway Story," a moving remembrance by the late Andre Dubus, in which he recalls how his crippled state came ...
