Gundega Rep}e's name in Latvian letters is associated with an attitude of defiance. During the occupation years her writing constantly challenged the required literary orthodoxy and got away with it. The present prose volume, "Red," bound in a cover that assaults the eye with its aggressive redness, parades the color that so often evokes shudders in the Latvian subconscious.
