The wave of discounting that has swept the supermarket sector in recent months means shoppers are now paying less for a basket of groceries than they did two years ago, according to our weekly research.

When we launched The Grocer 33 shopping survey in June 1997. our basket of regularly bought food and non food lines cost on average 36.51 [pounds sterling].

A year later the average price of the same basket of goods had jumped 2.28 [pounds sterling] to 38.79 [pounds sterling], an increase of 6.2%.
