A new family of tastes is poised to come to the UK yogurt market, with the imminent arrival of Toni Aloe Vera yogurts and yogurt drinks.

The range is a functional food, based around the succulent aloe vera plant, which is native to Australia. "We think people will come for the health and stay for the taste," says Toni export director Bruno Weber.

Aloe vera, a distant relative of garlic and asparagus, is already known as an ingredient for skin moisturisers and conditioners in Europe, but in the southern hemisphere it also has medicinal applications.
