Feb. 9--Richard Jones grew up near 24th and Seward Streets, in a home across the street from the auto body shop where he has now worked for 50 years. His father bought the building in 1949, when Jones was 7 years old.
Back then, he recalls, there were businesses all along North 24th Street, "and the streetcar ran up and down the street."
But in the late 1960s, Jones found himself throwing buckets of water on the body shop one night to keep it from burning during riots that ravaged the area around north Omaha's federal housing projects. A stigma from those riots still lingers.
