Feb. 11--This Friday morning edition of the Wichita Eagle comes to you despite the nearly complete emptiness of the paper's newsroom through much of Thursday afternoon, when most of the people whose work appears on these pages took a few hours off to say a final good-bye to Steve Harper.
Harper, who died of cancer Sunday at the age of 55, was for many years The Eagle's photography editor and then its outdoor writer. But the inadequacy of those titles in describing the man was apparent to all who packed the First United Methodist Church in Newton for his funeral.
Family and friends from many walks of life joined Harper's newspaper colleagues to remember ...
