Carl Everett is close to signing a deal that will keep him with the Red Sox well beyond the 2000 season, after talks between the ballclub and Everett's representatives began bearing fruit yesterday.

A long-term deal with Everett would represent a substantial step forward for the Red Sox, throwing Everett into the mix of core players, right beside Nomar Garciaparra and Pedro Martinez, heading into the first few years of the 21st century.

The center fielder is one of the rising young stars in the game and the Red Sox are just a couple of days away from keeping him under their control for the forseeable future.
