On late 10 February the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) drafted an order requiring all operators of MD-80 series and related aircraft to check for damage similar to that found on the Alaska Airlines MD-83 that crashed on 31 January.
The order gave airlines three days until 14 February to complete the inspections, which cover MD-80s, MD-90s, DC-9s and Boeing 717s.
So far since the inspections commenced on 10 February about 21 aircraft have been found to have problems and Alaska Airlines grounded two aircraft on 10 February after metal shavings were found around the ...
