* "Fifty years from now when babies are born they will have their own complete genetic code determined before they leave the hospital," predicts Craig Venter in the January edition of WIRED. He is president and chief scientific officer of Celera, a private biotechnology firm that is racing to map the human genome. "Whatever the equivalent of the CD-ROM is then--probably some tiny card--will be handed to each baby's parents. The parents will get a prediction of the physical makeup of their child in terms of likelihood of getting different diseases, type of metabolism, trends for personality, mental skills in a broad sense."
