Feb. 14--The San Francisco Examiner faces its most ominous deadline Tuesday.
That's the final day that Hearst Corp. will accept bids from potential buyers of the 112-year-old afternoon newspaper. If no offers materialize, Hearst plans to close the Examiner and merge the staff with the morning San Francisco Chronicle, which Hearst has agreed to buy.
There are plenty of San Francisco residents who want to stop the deal and keep the Examiner alive. But in an age when people can get local news from TV stations, radio and the Internet, many local and industry experts say the death of a declining afternoon newspaper doesn't really matter.
