COLUMBIA, S.C. - GOP presidential rivals John McCain and George W. Bush tangled in a bitter debate last night, accusing each other of making unfair personal attacks on each other's integrity.
"You should be ashamed," McCain said, accusing the Texas governor of standing by at a rally in South Carolina while a supporter assailed the Arizona senator's commitment to veterans.
"I don't know if you can understand this, George, but that really hurts," said McCain, who spent five years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam.
But Bush praised McCain's service to his country and said he cannot be held responsible for what the supporter said at the rally.
