COLUMBIA, S.C. - GOP presidential rivals John McCain and George W. Bush accused each other of making low-blow attacks last night in a passionate and often personal face-off days before the pivotal South Carolina primary.
McCain, in the most dramatic and bitter exchange of the televised debate, scolded the Texas governor for not apologizing for a supporter who charged McCain had abandoned veterans.
"I don't know if you can understand this, George, but that really hurts," said McCain, who spent more than five years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam. "You should be ashamed, you should be ashamed."
