As we reflect on where security has been in the last century and where it is going in the next, it can be humbling to note that our predecessors met challenges of a similar order. Consider, for example, the case that involved an arranged marriage and the hiding of a rare and treasured component in a coiffure during a border crossing, defeating the most stringent security controls of the age and resulting in the transfer of the secret of silk making from China to what has more or less become India. Only the pace of change and the speed and depth of communication were, perbaps, more forgiving in those days.
