The experience of railway privatisation in Latin America has been like the curate's egg-good in parts.
A long with Australasia, Latin America is, surprisingly enough, the region in which railway privatisation has made the greatest progress. Hardly anybody would have thought a mere 10 years ago that Latin American railways, except those in Colombia, were on the track to privatisation. In some cases an inexorable path to extinction seemed more likely than privatisation, and this actually happened in a few cases, such as Nicaragua.
