Article: Risk of GI bleeding seen with SSRIs.(selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors)

Using data from a study of ulcer complications caused by NSAID use, investigators found that the subjects taking selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) had an increased likelihood of upper GI bleeding. The data from 1,651 incident cases of upper GI bleeding and 248 cases of ulcer perforation, plus 10,000 controls matched for age, sex, and year of diagnosis selected from the UK general practice research database, were studied.

An association of SSRIs with bleeding disorders, mostly more trivial ones such as purpura, has been seen in other studies. The researchers explain that serotonin is one of the keys to the hemostatic defense against vascular injury. ...
