Feb. 15--The Tennessee Valley Authority is trying to recruit industrial prospects to Northeast Tennessee with sky box seats at the Bristol Motor Speedway.
But so far, the $70,000-a-year plan to lease luxury seats at the NASCAR track is drawing more denouncements than development. U.S. Sen. Fred Thompson, R-Tenn., called on TVA Monday to reconsider the speedway sky box along with other expenses for golf tournaments and business entertainment. A TVA watchdog group said offering sky box tickets to industrial prospects shows how the federal utility favors big industry at the expense of residential electric users.
