For nearly 85 years, the artist's mural masterpiece has graced a downtown Philadelphia landmark. Now someone is trying to remove it.
During the early 1900s, Maxfield Parrish was one of the three most popular artists in the world, based on the sale of his color reproductions. The other two? Van Gogh and Paul Cezanne--not bad company. Art historians estimate that by 1925, a Maxfield Parrish print could be found in one of every four American homes. Parrish's brilliant blue skies, sensuous landscapes, and dreamlike figures were trademarks that continue to excite and entertain the public imagination.
