For the many users of digital photography holding their breath waiting for the first cameras from Fuji Photofilm to use their new Super CCD image sensor, the wait's about over--the February release is just weeks away.
The Super CCD uses octagonal-shaped photo diodes with pixels situated on 45-degree angles. The first photos comparing output from the Super CCD sensor with that of existing square-pixel sensors appear to show both greater highlight and shadow detail as well as improved sharpness and color saturation.
