Afro-Caribbean music is antiphonal music, characterized by its call and response pattern. In this style of singing there is a soloist who introduces the central theme of the tune and a chorus that answers him with a repeated refrain.
These singers are direct descendants of Spanish trovadores and cantaores (singers) who engaged in a dialogue with their audience as they improvised their songs. These soloists also find their roots in the African akpwon, iworo and olubata (singers) who led all communal and ritual singing. In the Caribbean, these vocalists are now known as soneros.
