A material derived from the small intestines of pigs is revolutionizing the treatment of many medical problems from chronic sores to urinary incontinence in women to hernias.
The Food and Drug Administration has cleared 5 applications of its use, the most recent coming this month for full thickness wounds so severe they sometimes result in amputation. Veterinarians also are using the material in various surgical procedures, where it has prevented amputations and healed eye injuries that otherwise would have resulted in blindness.
