A few words on Louis Zukofsky's The Writing of Guillaume Apollinaire. A major American poet discovers a major French poet and, out of that reading/meeting, comes not only a precise and informative analysis-appreciation of the poetics of Apollinaire but, inexorably intertwined in this work, a description of Zukofsky's own understanding of poetry. In this manner, the "other" becomes the mirror image of the reader.
Two sections of this manuscript, II y a and & Cie, initially appeared in the Westminster Review (winter 1933 and spring 1934). In 2000, Wesleyan University Press will publish this manuscript as part ...
