ATLANTA -- A high-protein, low-carbohydrate weight-loss diet appears to increase insulin sensitivity in obese, insulin-resistant men, Dr. Peter M. Clifton reported at the annual scientific sessions of the American Heart Association.
Dr. Clifton, director of the health sciences and nutrition clinical research unit at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization in Adelaide, Australia, presented what he described as the first clinical trial to evaluate the controversial weight-loss approach promoted by diet-book guru Barry Sears. One disappointing finding: Insulin sensitivity was not improved in obese, insulin-resistant women.
