WASHINGTON -- Not acting on parental concerns about their child's development is one of the most common mistakes primary care physicians make about mental retardation, Dr. Chris P. Johnson said at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
"One of the most common problems I hear about as a specialist is that parents were told 'Don't worry, he'll grow out of it' by their [physicians] when they voiced concerns about their child's language," she noted.
When parents have a concern about their child's development, they are almost always right.
