At the beginning of a new century, it is salutary to reflect on the state of structural chemistry 100 years ago. Although Jacobus van't Hoff and Achille le Bel had postulated the tetrahedral carbon atom in 1874 and there was an awareness of the three-dimensional arrangement of atomic species in crystals, the formulation of chemical substances was essentially two-dimensional. The concept of the electronic nature of valence had hardly been born, while wave mechanics was still some 25 years away.
