Its four members are all songwriters, intensely hands-on. That's why Sloan has been described as four bands instead of one. But the slick Canadian popsters, who come to the Black Cat on Saturday, have had to weather much more than creative differences in a career that has spanned eight years and four albums.
Hailed as a Nirvana of the Great White North when its debut LP, the indie-rock-flavored "Smeared," came out in 1992, Sloan switched gears with its follow-up, 1994's "Twice Removed." It quickly found itself a pure-pop misfit amid the grunge music dominant at the time.
