With a low, ominous roar, the wall of snow bears down on the snowmobilers, hurtling toward them with the momentum of a freight train. Within seconds they are enclosed in a tomb of white death.
It is becoming an increasingly common scenario in the mountains of the West.
And Europe is experiencing the most lethal snowstorms in 45 years. Yesterday an avalanche roared into Galtuer, a small town in the Austrian Alps, killing at least seven persons. As night fell, at least a dozen more persons were missing.
