The 400 vandalized graves at Mount Olivet Cemetery were reconsecrated yesterday by Roman Catholic Bishop Leonard Olivier after a Mass in which he condemned the motives of vandals who would desecrate a holy place.
He then asked God for their forgiveness.
"God gave all of us a great gift of life, and that gift dwells here. It is sacred land. It is holy land," Bishop Olivier said during his sermon.
"The people who did this trampled sacred ground," he told about 150 people attending the Mass at the cemetery at 1300 Bladensburg Road NE. "We should give those persons forgiveness for their transgressions."
