Haley Brown is careful not to prick her finger as she tries to master a skill not many 22-year-olds can do these days: learning to sew.
"I wanted to do something I had never done before, and I thought it would be fun," she said Wednesday evening at the beginning sewing class she attends at G Street Fabrics in Rockville.
Thirty years ago, Miss Brown would have learned how to construct a piece of clothing from her mom or from a home economics or YWCA class. The tedious tasks of putting in zippers, cutting out patterns, and sewing buttonholes were one of America's rites of passage to womanhood.
No more. Schools rarely teach the art, sewing ...
