SAN FRANCISCO -- White women are much more likely than African American women to carry BRCA1 or BRCA2 genetic mutations, according to a study of unselected breast cancer patients in eastern North Carolina.

At the annual meeting of the American Society for Human Genetics, Mary-Claire King, Ph.D., presented BRCA1 and BRCA2 genotyping results for 207 patients with a history of primary invasive breast cancer.

The subjects were not selected for having an early age at diagnosis or coming from a high-risk family.
