Although it's been mostly in Washington, D.C., where the "digital divide" has stirred widespread debate and dustups, a service trial in rural Louisiana will determine the potential role of a wireless technology to help close the chasm.
The upcoming test in Houma, La., by BellSouth Corp. will explore the technical and economic feasibility of delivering wireless Internet access at blazing speeds of up to 1.5 megabits per second, which is 50 to 100 times faster than a typical, landline dial-up connection.
