James Fong once dreamed of breaking out of his investment-banker mold. Boy, has he done it now. The 35-year-old former Merrill Lynch dealmaker always wanted to start his own business. But he was daunted by Hong Kong's high office rents. Until last year, that is, when Internet frenzy started sweeping through town. With several hundred thousand dollars in savings, Fong decided to take a gamble. He founded an Internet music company, AsiaMix.com, to bring the music of up-and- coming bands to customers with MP3 technology.
