* Cardizem CD from Hoechst Marion Roussel generated more than $735 million in retail sales during the 12 months ending May 1999, according to a Scott-Levin audit. In June, Andrx launched Cartia XT, the first generic equivalent of Cardizem CD.
By August, Cardizem CD lost 46 percent of new prescriptions written by primary care physicians to Cartia XT, among cardiologists it lost 44 percent. Pharmacies substituted more than 40 percent of new prescriptions for Cardizem with the generic drug. By the week ending Sept. 10, the generic had gained more than 50 percent of the 70,000 new prescriptions dispensed for these two products.
