1999, the last year of the 1990s, ushered in the start of not only the new millennium, but the introduction of two new vineyard pests. The vine mealy bug and the glassy-winged sharpshooter leafhopper have both been found in the southern part of Kern County. To date, none have been found in wine or raison grapes. Current infestations are in table grape vineyards.
Of the two, the glassy-winged sharpshooter has the most problem potential, since it is also the vector for Pierce's Disease. At the present time, only the fact that Kern County has a low inoculum of Pierce's ...
