The stated objectives of this book are to provide 'an introduction to the sociolinguistic situation in those countries in which German has the status of a national language, with some consideration of those in which it has regional official status'. The situation to which Michael Clyne refers has changed considerably since he examined it in Language and Society in the German-Speaking Countries (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1984), and Germany has been at the heart of these changes.
