Two of Washington state's largest hospital systems, Swedish Medical Center and Providence Health System-Washington, are joining forces in an effort to hold down costs, enhance technologies and recruit new talent in an increasingly tight labor market.

The deal also would place under common control more than half of Seattle's nonfederal staffed acute-care beds.

In an agreement announced last week, the two Seattle-based not-for-profits will create a separate, jointly owned company to consolidate administrative tasks and develop new community healthcare services.
