Striking Calgary Herald newshounds hope printers will join them on the picket line
Day and night, 24 video monitors survey the printing press room at the Calgary Herald. "Those cameras can scan every square inch of the work area. They were installed in the weeks leading up to our strike," says Andy Marshall, local union president for the Communications Energy and Paperworkers (CEP). "Obviously, management is afraid that the printers support us." About 110 CEP journalists, photographers, graphic artists and librarians struck the Herald on November 8, along with 60 press cleaners, shippers and technicians in an affiliated union.
