John McCain's clipped and chilly departure from the GOP presidential race - delivered against a background of jagged mountain peaks yesterday - underscored the deep divisions still hobbling George W. Bush and the Republican party.
McCain, who announced he was "suspending" his campaign, barely mentioned his former rival - offering only that Bush "may" be the next president.
McCain did say he wouldn't wage an independent campaign in the fall. But there was nothing even close to an endorsement or reconciliation, and no effort by McCain to urge his followers to vote Republican in the fall.
