Business is Booming for Florida-Based Charter School Company.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Mar. 13--When educators Jon Hage and Sherry Ryan incorporated Charter Schools USA in late 1997, they had one employee: an administrative assistant.

Eight months later, they opened their first charter school, North Lauderdale Academy, and finished the first school year with revenue of about $1 million.

Today, the company has 200 employees, and manages four schools in South Florida. Next fall, it will open six more, two in Central Florida and four in Texas. The schools serve 2,000 students, and the company's annual revenue is about $2 million.
