During a March 12 internal party election, members of the Partido de Liberacion Nacional (PLN) voted overwhelmingly in favor of lifting the constitutional ban on re-election. Nobel laureate and former President Oscar Arias (1986-1990) has been campaigning since December 1999 to have the one-term limit revoked so he can run again for the presidency in the 2002 elections (see NotiCen, 2000-01-13).
The party vote was to select delegates to canton and district assemblies, to the party's National Assembly, and to party leadership roles in preparation for the 2002 elections. The voting also served to permit candidates for public office to further their chances of ...
