EVERY year 3,000 couples get married in Gretna Green. Nowadays it's usually a pre-planned romantic wedding - and Valentine's Day makes next weekend among the busiest of the year. But for other lovers Gretna is still the destination for a secret elopement. Its role goes back to 1753, when the law in England and Wales was changed to stop couples marrying outside a recognised place of worship. Desperate lovers fled across the border to Scotland, where even today, eloping couples over 16 can marry without their parents' consent.
