KINMEN ISLAND, Taiwan _ In a cavern carved out of a granite hillside on this heavily fortified island, a team of soldiers raced crisply Friday to load an 8-inch howitzer aimed at China, whose nearest island lies less than two miles away.
It was a practice drill, the kind under way all across Taiwan, where armed forces were on high alert before Saturday's presidential election. They are likely to remain so for days afterward.
