THE 1999 Kentucky Derby on May 1 is shaping up into one of the most open of recent years. But the month before the 'Run for the Roses' has a habit of changing perceptions, with the final prep races often bringing new names to the fore while causing some supposedly legitimate contenders to fall by the wayside.
Perhaps the most eagerly awaited of the trials is the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland in nine days' time, and if that should be won by the apparently very progressive colt Vicar, it may not seem such an open Derby after all.
