THE ancestors of the gloxinia are found hanging from the damp cliff faces in Brazil but only carry small violet flowers and large hairy leaves and as such are quite different to the splendid specimens we can buy as houseplants.
These new sinningia hybrids have much smaller leaves so the plants can happily stand on the window sill.
On the other hand, the flowers are like the softest velvet and are of such a size that they bring Hans Christian Andersen to mind - they are as big as tea cups.
